Overview
McLennan County will host the 88th Annual County Judges & Commissioners Association of Texas Conference. This is a great opportunity to get together with fellow judges and commissioners from across the state. An outstanding program is scheduled for elected officials and their spouses.
Budget cuts, tax increases, state mandates, constituent issues – these and other pressing issues are on our education program for this year. Our conference begins with a legislative update from several senate and house state legislators. The afternoon classes give judges specific information on voir dire, protective orders and probate inventory, and the commissioners’ education track focuses on the budgeting process, transportation fees and emergency communications.
On Wednesday, a panel discusses courthouse security, followed by a session on correctional health care costs. Thursday brings informative sessions on jail standards, appraisal caps, revenue caps, the effective tax rate and a legal perspective on social networking.
An exhibit show with a variety of companies offering services and products for counties is an integral part of the conference. Monday afternoon is scheduled for dedicated time with vendors. Please use this opportunity to meet, visit and learn from the vendors in the exhibit hall.
Several fun activities give you an opportunity to network with officials from across the state including the President’s Party and Vendor Appreciation Night. Enjoy dinner and entertainment at Host Court Night held at Waco’s Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
Wednesday is also the popular tournament afternoon, with domino and golf tournaments. And don’t forget the spouse activities on Wednesday.
If you are working to complete the Commissioners Court Advanced Curriculum courses, take advantage of the four courses offered Wednesday afternoon. County officials have the opportunity to obtain credits, and certificates are presented to those completing the curriculum at the Thursday luncheon.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the conference, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate new leadership skills through knowledge, training and ideas gained from conference educational sessions;
- Better understand the duties of other county offices and the role they play in county government; and
- Be familiar with legislative issues affecting Texas county government.
