December 7-16, 2010
Presented by: the Texas Association of Counties
Congratulations!!
You won and on Jan. 1, you’ll take the oath as a county official. Now what?
The Texas Association of Counties (TAC) is here to help you during the weeks between the election and the day you’re sworn in. Established and governed by county officials, TAC is here to provide services to Texas counties and assistance to all county officials. This one-day workshop, Preparing to Take Office, explains important laws that apply to all county officials. There are many unfamiliar statutes and rules you must be aware of even before officially taking office. Violations resulting from seemingly minor and unintentional errors often result in embarrassing lawsuits at the taxpayers’ expense. Understanding and avoiding these pitfalls allows you to promptly conduct the business at hand—confidently and without controversy.
A faculty of experienced former county officials and TAC staff will address several common problems that confront new officials. Our goal is to make you comfortable in your new position and help you understand the laws pertaining to your office.
The program includes sessions on managing employees, serving the public and the importance of your relationships with other officials and organizations representing elected officials. The workshop is interactive, and we want all new officials to have their “burning” questions answered before leaving.
You will also receive information about continuing education requirements and training sources for your specific office. Join us for this informative, one-day training held at a location near you.
Objectives
By the end of this program, participants will improve their understanding of:
- The legal requirements regarding a number of employment related issues including hiring, firing, nepotism, Fair Labor Standards Act and at will employment;
- The Texas Open Meetings and Public Information Acts and their impact on counties;
- Purchasing requirements and ethics for county officials;
- Positive techniques for building alliances and effectively working in the courthouse and the legislature; and
